View Full Version : Chill Out

Hi Folks,

Some of the posts lately have been going over the line a bit. I deleted a couple of threads that were going in the wrong direction, and I don't like to have to do that. Personal attacks cause posters to be banned, and that's a last-resort solution that I don't like to "resort" to.

Chill out a bit, people. This is supposed to be fun.

okay, what the heck...

Just for the aforementioned fun,

"What stupid comments do you have to put up with because you play hockey?'

Stuff like when you are taking your sticks and bag to the car or somewhere public, and somebody asks you, "Oh, do you play hockey?"

while most comments come from the "unknowing public," some can come from your own buddies...my favorite: on the rare occasion that I stand in for an absent goalkeeper, I'm putting on the pads, and somebody always asks, "Oh, are you playing goal tonight?" It's like, "No, I just like the extra protection of the big leg pads on defense..."

Anybody got any funny stories?

Do you use a ball or a puck?

Does your equipment get messed up by the asphalt?

etc

i hate that too, they think we just play out in the street or something...its a real sport and we play in real rinks. and also im fairly heavy set but not by much so every time i mention i play hockey i hear, are you goalie?

i think the very obvious somewhat related quote is how funny it is to hear players argue with the refs after a call as if he/shes going to get the refs to change his/her mind and say...you know what, your right, get back to the face off...my fault...

I alwyas hear the "so you guys play on the street?" line, it makes me so frustrated.

Also, what I hate the worst is when people know I play hockey, they come back with the "its a good thing i dont play hockey i would be fighting all the time!!!"

"I'll bet hockey players save a lot of money on toothpaste!"

(No one ever said this to me. I stole it from an ad.) :p

yea i hate the whole fighting and teeth stereotype, its just like any other sport, how many times do people get into fights during football? not much, and i really never see pro players without teeth, i dont even know where that stereotype came from. and i hate when people find out i play hockey and they're all "ooh i would be so good at hockey, just wait until somone comes at me then spin around and shoot" lmfao...i just laugh at them

Prob because of the 60's and 70's when players like Bobby Clarke were all over the TV with no teeth...

Today it's just a bunch of pretty boys with all those fake teeth in...

As far as the teeth thing goes, MANY players in pro hockey have teeth missing. The big difference between today's players, and those back in Bobby Hull's time (or earlier), is that cosmetic dentistry has come a LONG way over the last 50 years. Beyond that, paychecks have grown by leaps and bounds. I think you'd all be very surprised how many NHL'ers have missing teeth but you'd never know it thanks to unlimited amounts of money and good dentists.

is it because they wear half-shields? why dont they just wear full shield masks? are they scared to look like they want to protect themselves?

...are they scared to look like they want to protect themselves?

Yes, that is the reason. Locally we have about three dozen former teen players who are now in their twenties. To a man, they all took off the cage on their 18th birthday...after playing at a high competitive level, they have all (save one guy) gone and put the cages back on...and there have been about three semi-major facial accidents to act in catalytic fashion.

The reason still holds, however: shields are for wimps, real men wear cages...don't ask me, I'm just the reporter here.

thats a releif, i would much rather wear a cage because you protect your entire face, rather than a half shield which leaves everywhere under your nose exposed to skates, pucks, sticks, walls, anything hard basicly. i didnt understand that last bit about shields being for wimps though, wouldn't that make you not a wimp since you have less covered up?

Sorry, was referring to a full-shield, not the visor or half-shield...

I dont really understand that logic in general... both forms or face protection cover your entire face. Its not like one covers more than the other. I wear a cage but still dont understand the logic behind that statement. (not upset just curious where this thought comes from)

the thought that a shield is not cool, and a cage is cool, is of course, ridiculous, illogical, and only the product of the teenage or young adult mindset that muist have something to be cool at all costs...that is what I was alluding to....
