What does everyone think about this? There are 4 divisions in PIHA. If each division had their own all star team (which would be 4 teams). You could run a double elimination tournament that would determine who has the best division in the league. I am partial to the Rocky Mountain Division hehehe. I do know that all 4 teams would be awesome!! Just an idea. I just think that by having 2 teams worked out well last year because of how many divisions there was. Since we added a whole bunch of teams and talent. There will be alot of players that are very deserving of playing in the all star game that will not be able to based on popular picks, politics and all that other stuff. All in all this is just a suggestion but I think it would be alot of fun for the fans, players and all that would be involved. Let me know what you think, who knows maybe i am completly wrong on the whole thing hahaha!!

people on this site really need to stop stealing my ideas...

...and did anyone figure out what divisions are on what teams? i hope they've scrapped whatever the north/south idea was... there are so many teams in the league, each division should have an allstar team, then have a 4 team round-robin, with a finals and a 3rd place game...

and if every division has a team, and all the teams are balanced as in every team is represented by at least one player, i think the midwest division would roll as their talent is spread out the best, not to mention they arguably have the most to go around anyway. however i think the bandits and the growl are as talented as any all star team you could make from any division. both teams could easily have 5 all stars each.

The league has had this event planned for months. It would be simply impossible to do. You forget that the All-stars are being flown in, given accomodations and transportation, uniforms, ect all at the expense of the league. Your asking them to double that expense and it is simply not going to happen. An all-star should simply be that, the very best of the league. In the NHL you can name a large list of good players that don't make the all-star game.

true enough flynner, but if its the best of the best, with inline being 4 on 4 and there being 25 teams, figure a roster of 12 and 2 goalies, thats 28 all-stars... then you need to do away with every team being represented right? (probably should have done it last year lol) i guess we'll just have to wait and see how it ends up being handled and offer suggestions from there since you're right that its most certainly too late...

one alternative, one that obviously not everyone would like, is having 2 separate all star events in the east and the west. it would save on travel for the league and it gets more people involved, but half of the league misses out on some of the big name players like yoder, yingling, thomson, sullivan, pinhiero, etc... i'm sure it's a lot less to rent a bus between denver and st. louis than it is to fly everyone out to colorado. and the east teams, everyone is in reasonable driving distance to philly, so more savings there, just throw out a little money for gas or something...

hello snake, just wanted to set the record straight. i did not steal any ideas from anyone. i never even read your post so dont give yourself to much credit. anybody that knows me understands that i am a very respectful person and somewhat of an idealist. by no means would i write on someone elses idea. hey if you came up with it first, cool by me. i would consider it two minds thinking alike. i am just trying to think of ways to better our league and making it as interesting and as fun as possible for everyone involved. so, before you start throwing out cheap comments on people that you do not even know, think about what you are saying first before you just put down your comments on the chat board. Unless you do not care what people think about you, then if thats the case go ahead and keep writing whatever you want and no one will take you serious any more.

If he was joking around, thats one thing. however when you read someones posts you can not tell if that person is jokeing around , being serious, sarcastis or whatever. Words do not have any emotion. They are as they are read. I can not judge someones emotions when I do not even know who he is. If it was a joke, thats fine and I am man enough to apologize however reading it on this end it did not come off as one. I will never disrespect anyone on hear regardless of team affiliation or where you reside or what. i just expect the same considerations is all.

Easy big fella, take a deep breath, exhale, now re-read the post. No need to attack people, we all just want whats best for all of the players. If that means repeating ideas or 2 people thinking alike than good that means its a common interest.

sorry buddy wasn't trying to start anything, just marking my territory lol... we're all on the same team here... if anything i'm jealous because i'm supposed to be in vail enjoying the 40 inches of pow that my brother and his friends have been skiing since last thursday... but seriously i don't think my one comment really earned that kind of response... its not like i was taking shots at your mother or your manhood or anything, i thought it was pretty harmless... i was definitely not trying to put you down...

a suggestion though, maybe you should have checked out the other big thread titled "all star game" and you would have seen my post. on a different board you would have gotten it way worse for starting a new thread when a perfectly good identical thread is sitting right next to it...

and i thought the second part of your post was a fine question and i responded, maybe we could talk about that instead...

Hey, how about we have two all-star games, instead of one...oops, was that suggested already ? lol For the record, anybody that knows "The Snake" understands that he is as good a guy as you'll find, and hardly the type to bash anyone. If you really want to see some bashing, go back and look at the messages I've been sending over the last year or so to Ying, Troho, Flynn, and Snake, just to name a few...

That's the last time I stick up for you.

I am sure Charlie, or whoever named it, didn't think it was a big deal or they wouldn't have called it "Civil War". If someone in Africa or the Middle East get's offended by a Inline Hockey League than this world is in alot more trouble than we thought.

Its a name, or saying, that was meant to bring interest, no more no less, so we shouldn't make it a bigger deal than it is...its a hockey game.

While I understand that the term "Civil War" can be shunned upon by historians, just keep in mind that there have been far bigger venues to use a "War" term than our inline hockey all star game. Think about boxing, for instance. Hagler vs Hearns, fight title "War" Cooney vs Spinks "War by the Shore" numerous others, besides these. If Charley had named it something with the word "terror" in it, I would find it inappropriate, because it hits close to home. Unfortunately, there is always some form of war going on in the world, I don't think that ever stopped people from using that term in their events, and neither should we. I don't believe it demeans the great courage of our armed forces in any way. Just my opinion, though.

tooooo funny!!!!! were arguing over the use of the phrase civil war now? few facts for you boys, since apparently hockey doesnt provide enough of a topic material.

some definitions:
A war between factions of the same country; there are five criteria for international recognition of this status: the contestants must control territory, have a functioning government, enjoy some foreign recognition, have identifiable regular armed forces, and engage in major military operations.

(well all PIHA teams play in the same country now that the Canadian teams are not here. We all control our own hometown territory. We have a government of sorts... Not sure about foreign recognition but Im sure somewhere in some country someone has to recognize us. Lets call that foreign country our whining too good for roller brother Ice Hockey. We all have uniforms such as soldiers would making us indentifiable. And weekly we engage in military operations called GAMES)

Another definition to which would support Jimmy's therory of the term used for ages in sports competition as a title for events is:

The Civil War is the colloquial name for the annual college football game in the U.S. state of Oregon between cross-state rivals Oregon State University (the OSU Beavers) and the University of Oregon (the U of O Ducks). First played in 1894, it is the oldest college football rivalry on the West Coast of the United States, and the seventh longest in the nation.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_War_(college_football_game)

There is nothing wrong with the use of the name Civil War for sports. Nothing controversial, although the American Civil War was horrific, it was 141 years ago. (Im a big history buff) I dont feel that it insinuates anything in its use that would be deemed inapropriate. All the people who fought in it, witnessed it are long gone, and I doubt they will be upset with lil ol PIHA stealing its use.

So lets look at the implications of the league then if we were to remove it for that reason....war like properties in retrospect to this thread.
1. The name Mason/Dixon division would then need to be changed as well, as this was the name of the dividing regional lines between the North and South during the civil war.
2. The minutemen of Morristown would need to find a new name as well, because they represent soldiers under then General George Washington of our American Revolution when he was encamped there in 1778 during the harshest of winters in the WAR.
3. There would also be issues with the Massachusetts Bombers, Marple Gladiators, Southside Snipers, and lastly the Rivermen of the Gateway division. which by the way derives its name from the civil war itself and the men who navigated the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio Rivers which all converge in St. Louis to smuggle supplies, medicine, and rations by boat past Union blockades in the region for the Confederate soldier waiting. A vital profession that helped make St. Louis and the area a major port and hub to serve both factions, North and South in the WAR. Hence a new title and name was formed for that very reason GATEWAY......as in division for your PIHA league. it was the Gateway of commerce....still is to a smaller degree now. But it started from the Civil War.

Definition frorm Wikipedia.com:
No major battles were fought in or near the city, but the Mississippi River became a vital highway to secure during the war. Loyalties to the Union and Confederacy caused families in St. Louis to split apart, making the Civil War an influential battle for every community.

I think its ok to use it, now that we shed some common sense into its meaning. It isnt some taboo name or something.......let it go.....start thinking about hockey instead....
