View Full Version : ECRHA All-Star Voting
William Bourque
01-15-2007, 11:27 PM
For the first time ever, the ECRHA will be using a NHL like fan voting system, giving every player or fan the ability to vote for their favorite player or teammates. Just making the Ballot is an honor, but not everyone can be chosen. Now that the ballots have been announced, it is time for you to make your choices to represent your teams in the All-Star game. This year there will be three All-Star games (DI, DII, B) and each one should be extremely exciting and entertaining. Voting for the All-Star game will take place from Monday, January 15, 2007 to Monday January 29, 2007. At the conclusion of the two-week voting period, the top 12 players and 3 goalies will be elected to the All-Star game. The top 4 players and goalies will be named starters for their respective squads. Any ballots that are not completely and properly filled out will be discarded at the conclusion of the voting period. Additionally, every survey responses and the IP/Computer they originate from will be monitored. Any individual that attempts to circumvent the rule of one ballot per person will result in the entire teams forfeiture from participation in the ECRHA All-Star games and skills competition.

Ballots closed.
I guess all the warnings weren't enough. It was fun while it lasted
We'll come out with plan B for all-star voting tomorrow.

For those out of the loop, people kept resetting their cookies and voting repeatedly and unfortunately the service we used doesn't have a better way to combat repeat votes.

The games are definitely happening. It's now just a matter of how the all-stars are selected. It's probably just going to go back to the way it used to be- 1 vote per team.

I've got the IPs. I'm entirely certain of where they came from, unless someone really wanted to take the time to spoof their IP.
It's a moot point now - I'm still working on the ballot because unfortunately no one has a great foolproof system out that handles balloting the way we need it to prevent people from cheating.

what if we set up polls and have people physically come and cast their votes. Of course we would have everyone register first to be eligible to vote. We could track everyone by their SSN and such.......
I am surprised no one has ever thought of this before. I am smart.

If we're doing the game as a means to promote the league, then I think we should attempt to do a vote similar to the one that was just taken down. We all know that many people individually voted hundreds of times in the NHL All Star balloting, and that drew some attention to the league. If a team wants to sit around on the computer all day and vote for the same players, all power to them. The only problem we would encounter would obviously be the cost of hosting such a vote... no solution for you there..
If we're doing it to reward the most deserving players, allow the players only to vote, since they really know who the most deserving players are. Maybe some type of system could be incorporated through power play stats where each player could login and vote for the all stars in their division one time. I guess this would be similar to the way national rankings were voted on in the past, as team reps would log in once per week and rank their top 25 teams. By doing it this way, we can keep track of how many times a player votes, and who exactly is voting. Allow a max # of votes per roster (so that teams don't add "fake" players in an attempt to increase the votes for their teammates). Cap it at ~16 or so.
Just some ideas...
If we can't find a solution, I see nothing wrong with doing the vote the way we have in the past ...each team rep has one ballot and that team rep is not allowed to vote players from their own team.

nice job with these. if i could put some of my own input in, if we are trying to promote the league then maybe the 1 vote per person may be a good thing b/c that would force players that wanted votes to go outside of their team to try and obtain them and in doing so hopefully raise awareness. for rewarding the most deserving players maybe the league should just decide.
a few questions also.
does each team get a representative?(maybe get more attendance/ excitement for the actual all-star game)
with the return of the skills competition, are only the all-stars eligible?

I know this is late but I haven't checked up on whats going on over the break, but I for one do not agree with just stats being used for the all-star balloting. This is not fair especially to goaltenders that have a rotating system. One goalie could get the top of the hill teams while another getting games against bottom barrel teams which would make numbers look better... All I'm saying is numbers are deceiving. I'm not even sure if that is a major reason for the ballot selection, I could be wrong, but if it is I think there could be a better way to make selections. I don't want to stir anything up, just an opinion.

I don't want to stir anything up, just an opinion.Killian wasn't made an all star last year for his stats and I sure as hell wasn't made an alternate for my stats last year, either. Killian was voted in because he was the only thing keeping his team in games 99% of the time, and despite his stats, I'm pretty confident that he was a better goalie than everyone in ECRHA DII save for maybe two people, so clearly the system got it right. One of the guys on this year's ballot is one of two goalies that platoon... both goalies boast pretty great stats. Is that indicative of two sick goalies? Probably. Is is also indicative of a very good team? Sure. I'm not sure how any system can get around the fact that sick goalies on weak teams have poor stats versus good goalies on good teams have great stats, and I think that whomever makes the ballots tends to take that into account. I guess the true test is: if you could have any goalie in the league on your team, who would it be? I know that my top 10 would have very little to do with stats.
(full disclosure: I'm on the ballot this year with pedestrian stats, and I think there were a bunch of other candidates that should be in front of me. I guess someone thought I deserved to be there, so thank you for the vote of confidence.)

when I say that Im not saying it for the goalies who see a lot of shots. Im saying it for the better teams who can have a goalie play the bottom barrell teams and get 10 shots and a shutout. Then the other goalie on that team can play someone like neumann get a bunch of shots and let up 4 or 5 goals which can still be a good game, but their stats won't be as good because they are seeing more and better quality shots.

The way it worked is as follows:
Every team would have atleast two people on the all-star ballot and could have anywhere from 2-5 per team...The way the list was established was by knowledge of teams and statistics...Once the "Master" list was created, it was around 20-30 names of players for each team, having two teams per division. From there, after reviewing this season stats and game performance, people were struck off the list for whatever reason.
I hope that makes sense.

I would rather not names, because I do not want to stir anything up, and I hope this was done in a manner that everyone can respect, but there are teams who use multiple goalies, and the way it has worked out one of them has played the tougher competition, and I am by no means saying that everyone on the ballot isn't deserving just saying that maybe it needs a closer look at times. I was just looking at goalies but maybe even with players too.

This reply is not only in response to this thread, but to basically every other thread on this entire message board. If you want schedules to come out early, or if you want all star voting updates, or stats updated, or the nationals location, then why don't you take some time out of your day and volunteer and work for the league.
It's one thing to sit here and discuss where you think nationals will be or what not, but does everyone really believe that Billy Bourque's only important thing in life is to get out a schedule for Feasterville or make up a new all star ballot. For the love of God, you know what teams are going to be there and who you haven't played yet, figure things out on your own.
In addition, all this talk of approval for trips and what not: At the beginning of the season, why don't you just submit travel requests for every event. Fill out the necessary online forms or paperwork or whatever and then wait and see which ones you're going to. If you end up not being at an event, then just cancel the trip with the school.
It honestly drives me insane when I come on here hoping to read interesting posts and what not and only see people whining and complaining about volunteers aren't doing their jobs fast enough.

Asking for a schedule 9 days in advance isn't exactly being demanding. Other regions have schedules out weeks or months in advance.
I never called out Bourque. I don't even think he has anything to do with making the schedule. But FYI, Bourque wants to know about the Nationals location just as bad as everyone else (see other threads).
And whether or not I can figure out what teams are playing who, maybe its people like me who are outsiders and fans who want to watch games (see neuman vs. towson thread), but have no clue when they are until the last minute.

Fill out the necessary online forms or paperwork or whatever and then wait and see which ones you're going to. If you end up not being at an event, then just cancel the trip with the school.
Great plan... Except for requesting funding for trips requires specifics, such as dates, locations, attendees, and itineraries specific to the minute in the case of bus drivers. All of which is dependant upon this announcement which, in my opinion, is overdue (Side note: The reasoning for this announcement not being made may be valid, but I still think it is overdue)
Not to mention, turning a check around through the administration of our school in particular can take upwards of two months from initial submittal to having said check in hand to mail out.
No one blames the individuals doing the work.. that's apparant by all the posts saying "I just wanted to say I appreciate all the hard work you do", but for a paying member of an organization to have complaints about the timeliness of some work is not unreasonable. Not volunteering may be due to not having time, not not caring... That doesn't mean that paying member isn't entitled to ensuring checks and balances which make the organization run smoother in the future...
I'm done babbling, you probably got my point an hour ago...

Asking for a schedule 9 days in advance isn't exactly being demanding. Other regions have schedules out weeks or months in advance..
Not here to start a fight, but what good is a schedule in advance if event dates get rescheduled or you have multiple forfeits in a weekend?
That said, we try to get them out as early as possible - it's been close to 2 weeks in advance for most of the season - but as usual it's 10% of the teams causing 90% of the problems.
When you have ~ 50 teams in a region the chance of things getting royally screwed up by one team is exponentially higher than when you have 15.

It's one thing to sit here and discuss where you think nationals will be or what not, but does everyone really believe that Billy Bourque's only important thing in life is to get out a schedule for Feasterville or make up a new all star ballot.
Acutally, its a pretty well know fact that the only important things to me in life are food and hockey...seriously, my steaks last night were awesome and my Roto Chiken tommorrow is going to be outstanding...
Yea, but you know with classes in there, and skiing 2-3 times a week, my hockey time is cut down...
And Honestly, i really don't care were nationals are...it doesn't really have anything to do with me, the odds of my team going are smaller than me being named head coach of Team USA in the next World Championships...Even if we make it and found out tommorrow, it wouldnt do me any good besides the fact that i would know personally where it is...
Finally, i will leave you with this...Tonight while skiing, i saw someone get taken out by the chairlift and thrown into the booth where the conductors sit to get warm...may have been the funniest thing i've seen since the last time i saw burke attempt to play goalie

I think the AD that works with our club would kill me if I did that. Beyond that, the school requires that I list where we're staying, how we're getting there, who's going, and times of arrival/departure. It's just not feasible at all.
Our school moves slow. If we are fortunate enough to make Nats, I will have to be in the offices pushing for reserve funding the next day. If I'm lucky, we'll get something. If I'm really lucky, it happens before we leave.
Regardless, we are paying to play. I understand that Mike, Bill, et. al. take a lot of **** for this. It's not easy to do what they do. I appreciate it (especially their patience). Still, concerns can be voiced. If it's done in a respectful manner, it will help the league. And if it's the teams that are screwing everything up, then the onus falls on us.

Just a suggestion, don't got to jump all over me. At PSU, we submit all of our forms online and then the school processes them as need be. It works for us, so I was just throwing it out there as an idea.

The skills competition should just be Burke, Phil Bourque (in net), and that guy's grandma. That would be more entertaining. Until someone breaks a hip...

i would hope that the selection of the all-star teams are more of a popularity vote than the best palyers of the league. this is the second year in a row that josh stein of towson, one of the best players in the league, was over looked. he's not the only one either. there are some D2 players that were left out of the game as well. scotto from newman wasnt selected? if i'm watching an all-star game, thats what i want to watch, all-stars. i'm not saying that some are not worthy of the of the spot, but if guy's like these are left out is it truely an all-star game? NO. i want to watch the best in the league play, not someone that went to the computer lab and had a bunch of people vote them. i hope stein and the rest of the true all-stars of the league that were left out tear the rink up the rest of the season!

If people are unhappy with how the voting is conducted for the allstar game, they could come up with a proposal for how the voting should be done and bring it up at the ACC meeting in March.
I agree some very talented players did not make the game. With that being said, there is a lot of talent in the league and not everyone on the ballot can play in the game.

I know the schedule was just put up, I was looking at temple's last game and its againts West Chester B at 4:15PM, and I noticed Drexel Bhas a game against Millersville. Wouldnt it make more logical sense to let Temple play millersville and count that as an exhibition game rather than both teams play B teams??
Thanks,
Brandon

I think it's beneficial for the B teams to take on DII teams. It may not always be ideal for the DII team, but whatever.

Yeah, I'm relatively sure our B team and our coaches would like them to take on Millersville.
Our DII team is playing Stony Brook B, if that helps any.

Teams only play 16 regular season games this year. And MU has played Temple twice already. It would make more sense if it was not an exhibition game, I'd love to have the 'best of 3' game against you :)
