my .02 cents for what it is worth. I have seen these players play or I know them and how they play. So while some may say it is "Jilted". I accept that.I have not designated Forwards or Defense simply because these guys can do pretty much what ever in a game situation.

Its so funny how Tom Bruce and Jim Tamburino isnt on eveybodys list. Am i the only person here who thinks they are the second and third best player out there (of course behind Thompson)? Just watch them two play and you'll realize how good they are.

trust me, i know how good Tamburino is, i just didnt put him on my list. Doesn't mean i don't respect him for how he carries himself on and off the rink and for how he plays the game.


It's also really hard to name someone top 4 when you never have seen them play. Most people in the ECRHA know how good some players are that teams from other leagues may just overlook. I can't say that ____ from the WCRHL is top 4 when i have never seen or watched him play. It's much easier with teams that you have watched play.

(Sorry for all the words, I had a few hours to kill. I’m bored at work, and I’m here alone while everyone else vacations, hence the long post.)

I'm not sure what the criteria are supposed to be, but my picks are who I think is the best, out of the players I've actually seen live.

So if a player who seems to belong on the list isn’t there, it’s because I can’t remember seeing him.

This is based on the latest information I have on these players (some I've seen within the last couple weeks, others I have on video - Shippensburg and Emory are the only teams with players on here who I haven't seen on video.)

I tried my best to be objective.

Division II....

Goaltenders
1. Kyle Shrauger (Brockport)

1.37 GAA and about a .950 save percentage in his career against UMSL is good enough for me.

I also saw him 3x at State Wars, where he was outstanding, and in the quarterfinal last year against UCSD, where he was the reason Brockport was able to win despite losing Bauman (more on Bauman later).

2. James Cash (Saint Louis)

Having another solid year, and he was very good in his PIHA debut.

3. John Pecher (Truman State)

This kid is awesome.

DEFENSE

Brian Bauman was second on my list behind James Wetton last year. It was really a 1/1a thing, and the only thing that decided it was head-to-head.

You could argue that the head to head matchup proved nothing, since Bauman was a whole twelve hours removed from what had looked like a devastating shoulder injury.

He was clearly limited, and we put a lot of pressure on him, but he gutted it out and was still his team's best player.

How he did it, I'm not sure, but it was ballsy.

Anyone (Brockport/ECRHA people) know any details on his injury and how he was able to come back?

Also, I saw him on Rutgers' roster before the season. What happened with that?

Anyway, this year's list....best DII defensemen…

1. Tommy Hagg (Shippensburg)

This kid is just sick. Best hands in the country - it's a close one between Hagg and Zach Stacy.

2. Adam Clarke (UMSL)

I'm biased, but Clarke is definitely All-America material. Maybe he belongs at #1. More on him at the end of the post.

2a. Dominic Mariotti (Neumann)
(I wanted to be the first to have Mariotti this high, but Sangiorgio beat me to it.)

4. Tony Luiten (Nevada)

5. Bill Giersbach (Neumann)
Saw him at State Wars too.

6. Dino Virone (Hofstra)
He murdered us in '05.

7. Jim Dougherty (Truman State)
Didn't play first semester, he was playing ice hockey in some kind of elite league in France.

8. Billy Gabelman (Emory)

9. Brian Keefe (UCSD)
(He’s the best player I know of who weighs less than me...)

10. Truman Patterson (Truman State)
Most improved player in the GPCIHL.

11. Marc Toso (UCSD)
12. Eric Thompson (UMSL)
13. Ryan Weekes (Elon)
14. Patrick Wlazel (Neumann)

15. Jimmy Cruse (Truman State)
Cruse is a close second to Patterson for most improved in our league.

If you want me to be perfectly honest, I think Stacy is better. But Scotto gets the "career achievement" nod. He's currently the standard-bearer in DII.

Just being mentioned here is a high honor. Gsell is a great player.

Honorable Mention: Ken Jung (Michigan State) and the rest of Lindenwood's roster, inclusive.

(Once again, I've only listed players I have seen, so if there are glaring omissions, that's why.)

And a final note on Clarke/Stacy/Scott...

A few weeks ago, they were on a tournament team (mostly UMSL players) in the Gold bracket of the Tour Christmas Cup at Matteson Triplex. They got blown out by Lindenwood in their last round-robin game (Sat. night) and were the bottom seed (4) in the elimination bracket.

Their Sunday morning semifinal opponent was the #1 seed, whose bench was about 10 deep, and who (oh, by the way…) had beaten Lindenwood in the round robin. The roster included a former NARCh Junior Gold tournament scoring champ, a former USA Junior World Team member, and on and on.

On the other hand, only five players from the #4 seed showed up – Adam Clarke, Zach Stacy, and Jeremy Scott from UMSL, Jeff Perkins from St. Charles, and goalie Dave Garland (Wash U ’06).

Great players, but having no subs, there was no logical reason to believe this team wouldn’t get mercied.

But somehow, Clarke/Perkins/Scott/Stacy/Garland won the game 5-4. Stacy had multiple goals, including the game-winner, but all five guys deserve equal credit.

They were able to overcome a 4-2 deficit with less than 8:00 left (running clock), taking a 5-4 lead in the final two minutes, and for the final half-minute of the game, they protected their lead against the full fury of a 6’3”/225 Junior A power forward who’s ranked by Central Scouting and will play NCAA DI ice hockey next season (I’m not making this up).

Oh yeah, and that guy wasn’t even the best player on his team.

Even the biggest upsets make sense on some level - most of them have a logical explanation.

This one does not.

It was absolutely ridiculous, in every possible way. I've never seen anything like it.

Clarke said, "playing smarter, not harder." That's another Clarke line (like "picking up grit") that I'll probably shamelessly steal for an article sometime.

Tommy Bruce and Marchand and you can go down the list of just about any LU player and not be hurt. TB is a PHENOMENAL player.I was just not going to make the top players ALL LU players.Can you pass on Barnette? no!

I think there is a good mix of players on everyones roster chosen on here. Can anyone just straight come out and say THAT is a bad team of choices? not hardly!

This is great. I have to also say that some of you here in the Midwest, havent seen Charlie Middleton and Bret Middlekauf play.... but they are some great players too.

i can only go off of what i saw last season at nationals since i dont play now and some of these guys might not play anymore so i just want to throw some names out that i thought are all american caliber.
brandon gregor (nc state) he wasent the best player at nationals but was certainly one of them. fast, great hands, good shot. i would have loved to have seen him go against gsell and towson one more time. i think those two are very evenly matched.
dane johnson (ucf) again, i am biased because the first names that come into my head are ones from my league but this kid is really good. he had an unbelievable game against western michigan and had one of the nicest goals ive ever seen.

My ECRHA all star line-ups.

G: Vensel
D: Tamburino, Fulton
O: Fischer, TOSS-UP between Stein, Brodsky, Calajoe, a few others.

I think that one thing about the ECRHA is that with Lechmanski and Gsell leaving, we haven't really seen individuals dominate games like last season(with exceptions, of course). To me, that has made a lot of games much more enjoyable to watch on all levels and when players do step up and make individual plays, it's that much more exciting and fun to watch.

Lutrell smells like my socks. There's something about watching him (and Sines, as well as Brad Blake of years past) that pisses me off. They are all lazy as heck and play like they are being punished.

I do have to agree with the ECRHA observation. Every year it seems there are a few guys you can count on to dominate games (Abbott, Nuzkowski, Brunk, Lechmanski, Gsell) but I think this is a huge transition year and the dominant guys have yet to take control.

Too bad we don't have all the stats and any videos from back in the day. All-time teams would be fun, too.

Side question...do any other teams have 'retired' numbers? I just reminded Pitt that #8 (Mike Abbott) isn't allowed to be worn and wondered if any other teams did that?

PSU retired Ron Dax's 24, albeit for different reasons. Other than that, we haven't really retired anything else, although we have started compiling some all time stats and what not, trying to actually create a legacy with our program. It's pretty fun and gives the guys something cool to aim for.
