How do you feel about players wearing cages in the pro Division? I personally do not like, because some players act a little tougher than they really and they tend to be care free with there sticks......I think a half sheild is good enough.

After wearing a cage for Many years at this level, I agree with ya. However, leagues probably won't go through with a non-medical ban on cages until players are making enough money to put their faces on the line. After all... the day job pays the bills, the "pro" hockey career pays for... umm... I'll get back to you on this one.

As much as I agree with you on the getting tough part I totally disagree with you on you should not be aloud to wear a full mask. You are correct about some people acting tough behind them, but there are great players in the league that do not wear them and do not act tough, they just play the game hard. Davidson, Keating and Fischer are just some of them from the Growl. The ones that think there tough and wear a cage are usually in the minors and are immature. This assuming your talking about PIHA, im not sure if you are.

i'd love to be able to never have to worry about paying for dental care, but as it is, i'm in the process of having 3 metal rods installed in my mouth to fix the teeth i had knocked out by an ice hockey puck... and i still don't wear a cage. but the more work i have done on my mouth, the more i think about putting one back on... there's no way you could tell players that they aren't allowed to wear them...

To me, I'd like to see the cages gone. And not because some kids (mostly) will flap their gums while hiding said gums behind a cage. I see far more sticks come up from guys in cages than from those without. In many cases it seems that the player is just sloppy with the stick, all the time. Perhaps this comes from never catching somebody elses stick in the chops, I dunno. And no, I'm not saying that every cage wearing player is a machette weilding maniac, its just that I seem to skate more caged players to the box while the other ref is checking the other guy for a cut than I do guys with a few scars on their face.
Further, when you get into contact, that cage can really tear up a face. And that doesn't have to be a full contact match, just when bodies are coming together in front of the net. I have seen that twice while reffing in the house leauge locally.
I understand the need/desire for protection, but the cage (to me) has a lot of drawbacks. A half visor is kind of a compromise, but at least the majority of the damage it can do is to the wearer.

It would be nice if that really made a difference anymore, but we've reached a point where just about everyone playing has grown up with a cage on... when you've played from age 8 to 18 wearing a cage, taking it off isn't going to break bad habits. don't get me wrong, i agree that it's a problem, but it's way too late to change it, and i think evidence of that can be seen all the way up to the nhl...
