Just for fun, guys, everybody share:

What's the dumbest hockey-related question you ever got?

Sometimes I stand for an absent golakeeper, and as I am putting on the pads, somebody always asks, "are you playing goalie tonight?" It's like, "No, I just want to skate with big leg pads tonight."

Little kids will see me in my skates and ask, "Do you play hockey, too?" Like, because I'm old, fat, and slow, I couldn't possibly, actually play the game." I usually just answer," Well, I'm gonna try. I'll just do the best I can."

What's the ridiculous stuff you get asked?

After your first question...I feel like saying "Here's your sign"! Bill Engvall style.

Although this may not be the dumbest, how many of you have heard "Oh you play hockey? You must have strong ankles" This is usually uttered by the ankle benders at public skate wearing the flimsy rental figure skates (2 sizes too big).

Or...

"You play hockey? But you have all your teeth"???

The dumbest question I received was a few years ago. I was reffing a Beginner Level league and the guy asked for a timeout during the middle of play. And when I would not give him the timeout he stopped and got into my face and said that you can call for a timeout during play. I simply told him if he wants a timeout go play basketball.
Edited by RichardGraham on 07/12/06 12:41 PM.

Here is a good one....

I live in FL where it is hot. When I tell people that I play hockey they ask, "Isn't it a little hot in FL for hockey," as if there are no indoor rinks at all. These are the people that are not aware that the TBL won the Cup two years ago.

Another one that is more a little kid thing than anything and I know I used to do it to my dad for fun.....hitting him in the shins with his pads on saying, "Does that hurt?"
Always fun stuff, my wife does that now.

AIRHS and AAU both used to permit calling a timeout with possession in the middle of play. Not sure if AAU changed the rule.

I know but this was a beginner league, and I go by USA rules. I am also a ice player and my rink does not have that rule and no other rink has that rule in NJ.

I was sitting in the Pepsi Center 15 rows up from P. Roy when I heard a lady tell her friend that they blew an icing because all the players rushed down for the puck and sprayed it with ice. so they had to stop play to and get the snow off the puck.

I know other people have gotten this one when someone finds out you play and they're all amazed...
"So are you any good?"
Honestly, how do you answer this question and Not sound like an arrogant shmuck? haha.

Another one I love is...
"Well, why don't you play Ice and go for the NHL?"
Okay... how do you brush these people off and not get laughed at. haha.

yeah, that's a good one...and the only answer is ,"Aww, I'm all right."

At our local rink here in Texas, we have found only one constant truth in answers to that question: anybody who tells you "Oh, I'm from California," is novice in skill level, and not near as good as they would want to you to believe, let alone believe themselves.

The guys who are really from California won't ever tell you that, they'll just go out and play...

So, there is no real answer to that one, eh?

I would certainly hope that they changed that rule.

And how many years do you have to play before you learn that the penalty box is directly across from your bench??? Now, before I start getting the "my rink isn't set up like that" posts I am aware that not all rinks are but it still makes me laugh to see these men's league guys that have spent thousands of dollars to play the sport and still don't know which box it is.
