Hi All,
I play either pickup, drills, or rec league everyday. I have been playing for 2 years now. My username should also say old (I'm 38). Can anyone tell some of the symptoms of a hernia? I strech (especially groin) before and after I play but I feel some pain in my groin, hip area, and lower stomach especially when I stride.
Also, I have noticed that when I straighten my leg and contract my thigh muscle as hard as I can I get a cramping or "knotting" pain. Has anyone else experienced this?
I really enjoy playing and any advise as how to prevent these muscle pains would be greatly appreciated.

ive had 2 hernias. i didnt have pain with either but i was also 16 and 19 when i had them and not 38. the way to know is that there is a bump in your lower abs or a certain part (the beans)of your anatomy is bigger.

another way is standing up and leaning back. if you feel something pull in you abs thats probably a hernia.

get it checked out anyway cause im no dr and neither are you.

HI F&S,

My ex-girlfriend is a message therapist, The only thing I can think of it starts at your back if you have some back problems it will continue down your leg because it has to work harder. I do not know if you have back pain but that would be one reason. which you can see a therapist that would really help if you do. The other thing would be dehydration or lack of calcium which would do excactly what you are saying. I cramp up the next day if i had a long night drinkin because of dehydration. Good luck.

Welcome from a fellow oldster. I'm just shy of 36.

It sounds to me like you have a sports hernia. I had one a few seasons ago. It's a mild tear in the muscle of the lower abdominal area where nothing pokes out (as it would with a traditional hernia.) They are notoriously hard to heal. I played through mine, and basically learned to skate differently. Do some internet searches on "sports hernia" and you'll get a lot of info. Beware what your family doctor telsl you, if you go see him/her ... these things are often misdiagnosed.
