You all see this one. The Buffalo Sabres are experimenting with a Blue ice surface instead of the traditional white ice. Hmm... wonder where they got the idea for a blue surface. *rolls eyes*

Very cool post...

Hey, Buffalo and the NHL! Get with it! If you go to the blue ice, then you make the lines and the circles red! Leave the center line blue, that's okay, or go back to the blue lines being dark blue, and the center line and circles red, for pete's sake! From what stupidity did the orange come from?!?...don't make me start with insulting ice jokes...and by the way, if you have blue ice, then you get rid of the stupid yellow kick plates, and then you have a rink that is red, white, and blue American, and it looks way cool!

Hope they figure it out, but I doubt they will...

this begs the question. Why was sportcourt not made in white?

Back in the RHI days when roller hockey was on television, it was determined that white picked up too much glare, making the games difficult to view. I guess the light blue color has just stuck, although i have seen some other shades (tan, dark blue).

In my 11 years of roller, I don't ever remember seeing dark bue tiles. What color puck was used with the dark blue surface ?

Williamsburg has a dark blue surface...just 4 years ago. The game puck is black.

The DC Mad Dogs play on a dark blue surface... they use one of the bright orange IDS pucks.

currently ? That's dumb ! I've never played in net, but I understand that the yellow and orange pucks are real tough to pickup in the air.

Are you sure the puck is black ? How would you see it ?

I have seen pictures from MLRH games (Williamsburg Warriors vs. Mass Jokers possibly I really am not sure) where the surface is definetly alot darker then the blue Sportcourt that is typically seen (similar if not the same as the blue lines @ Zrink and other rinks) and the puck is most definetly black. It's harder but not difficult at all to see.

Yeah, that's what we play with currently. As a player it's not so bad, but I can definitely see where a keeper would have some serious issues trying to pickup on it if it's flying up in the air with white boards behind it.

I worked a tournament in Downingtown with the dark blue court and we used red pucks. It wasn't that bad. The lighting there didn't help too much either.

as a side note.. the ECHL (formerly WCHL) Long Beach Ice Dogs use a blue ice surface. I've been going to the games off/on for a year and it's been that way.

I played at a rink once that had a black dasher. that was fun when we used a black puck.

I wonder if there are any studies about what colors the human eye picks up best against certain backgrounds. I'm curious if there's any scientific basis for this or if it's just better for TV.

A study was how the MISL came up with their orange (oh, excuse me, "rocket red") soccer ball...visual against the green turf, the dasher boards, the crowd, and worked well for tv too...I think that's why the Jofa Speed Puck was red/orange originally...
