Hi Folks,

What are you listening to now? I'm liking Green Day's "American Idiot" and "Get Born" by Jet for recent stuff, and digging some Eric Johnson "Tones" and "Ah Via Musicom" from my collection of older CDs. And, of course, almost any blues music.

And does anyone agree that most radio stations these days stink to high heaven? The only consistently good station I've heard in a long time was in Phoenix last summer. I don't remember the call letters, but Alice Cooper was actually a DJ on it!

I agree that most radio stations are just horrible. In Hartford there is one exception, 106.9 WCCC im always listening to it. There doing extremely well for an independent station there always out promoting concerts and since there always live you can always get a request in. In terms of what Im listening to right now the new Motley Crue stuff is good along with Greenday, Damageplan, Chronic Future, Papa Roach, Dogfight, theres just to much stuff to list. Theres one thing you can always count on, music+hockey=good times!

Absolutely love '30's Big Band...top five, all time:

5. Swingtime in the Rockies -Benny Goodman
4. Begin the Beguine -Artie Shaw
3. One O'clock Jump -Count Basie
2. In the Mood -Glenn Miller
1. Sing, Sing, Sing! -Benny Goodman

Also have some of the retro, "period" stuff: Rod Stweart's, "American Songbook," Queen Latifa's "Dana Owens Album," and everything that the Brian Setzer Orchestra has done...

Nothing better than swing dancing with 400 kids of all ages at the "Chicago Palladium." Way cool!

Hi RJ,

Thanks for your post. I appreciate it. What my buddy did to cancel out bad radio was to purchase a subscription for an MP3 download site. He gets 40 songs for $10 a month. That way, he gets to listen to what he wants, when he wants, and has built up an awesome collection that he can burn to a CD. It's not the top-40 stuff, he says, but you can get rock, jazz, blues, classical, comedy, etc.

>>music+hockey=good times!<<

Definitely!

Hi Danny,

Isn't Setzer's "Guitar Slinger" album incredible? I'm not typically into big band stuff, but man, this music ROCKS! I think it's Setzer's guitar that cuts through what would normally sound sappy and slow to me, and makes it fantastic.

I also have a Dr. John CD on which he covers Duke Ellington called "Duke Elegant: "The Doc Meets the Duke" -- I love it and highly recommend it to you. Check it out via Google.

I like all kinds of music except R&B, Hiphop, and Rap. There are certain songs I like but other then that. I like music that gets you going. I occasionally need that slow song because that is the only why i can dance. I can only slowdance. I may have to learn one day but i am trying to put it off.

My favorite music before games is Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine & Tool. And, yes I do play a physical game.

My son says he doesn't need the music. He has always said he doesn't need to get "pumped up" or "in the zone" to play. Just step out there and play! Has worked for him 14 years.

I wouldn't say I need it but it gives me a boost for a long tiring drive to a road game.

haha... I tried the whole pump-me-up thing with the tunes... and about 2 years ago I realized that I didn't need it at all. Definitely used to listen to Linkin Park, Metallica, etc etc... figured out that I got a little too pumped and didn't concentrate on the fundemental things. So now it's the opposite, I'm listening to chill trance/techno music and stuff like Dave Matthews to kinda relax me a bit so I don't go all ape-spit out there.

Richard, ever listen to Johnny Clegg & Sevuka (spelling?).

Currently I'm on a blues kick. Right now my desktop is streaming one of Itunes' blues channels. Recently I have been digging out the Doors discs for the truck though. I finally watched the Oliver Stone movie the other day and that got me fired back up to hear Mr Morrison wail a bit.

As far as pre-game, I side with Ian and FrankFrank. Just go do your thing. Save the music for the after party

To get fired up, I listen to rock like Linkin Park, or some Drum & Bass like DJ Dara or Roni Size.

Generally I listen to Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Soul and House. Lots of underground, not really into the mainstream gangsta boogie stuff...

Talib Kweli and Mos Def are my favourite Hip Hop artists. Funk/Jazz/Soul it gotta be Breakestra, Nina Simone and JAMES BROWN!!! For House Kaskade and Mark Farina.

Nice to see that there are people out there that listen to REAL music. I am a huge Drum and Bass fan. Me and a couple of my boys threw Jungle parties in NJ back in the day. I also spun D&B and house for years. My favorite artist is LTJ Bukem. Others on the top of my list are DJ SS, ODI, and DJ Rap. How hot is she ?? My favorite house DJ's are Mark Farinha and Joeski. Do you have Farinha's Mushroom Jazz's ? I used to travel to events and have seen all these DJ's numerous times in all over the east coast. My favorite Hip Hop artists are Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Scienz of Life.

I have Mushroom Jazz 3,4 and the latest addition 5. It's tite like a mofo!!! Mark made the tempo a little faster making it so you can chill and rock to it! Ideal for Bboys like me!!! DJ Rap is hella hot!!! Some of here stuff is pretty dark, kinda threw me off gaurd. Judging by her looks I thought she would dig more liquid funk or latin Drum & Bass like DJ Flight off of BBC 1Xtra. I attended Planet of the Drums a few years back. Craziest Jungle Party!!! Diesel Boy, AK1200 and Dara gets my adrenaline going!!!

You saw Blackstar LIVE!?!?! Your so lucky. I don't think they'll ever come to Canada. = (

I really want to meet Mos and Tweli one day. Shake there hand and thank them for influencing my way of life...

MUSIC ROCKS!!!

Gotta get the first mushroom jazz. Did u ever hear LTJ Bukem's Progression Session cd's ? If not GET THEM (4,5&6)!! real mello & jazzy. They are double discs with one disc being an instrumental mix and the other has MC Conrad MCing over the mix. AMAZING STUFF. Another great jungle cd is United Dj's of America - DJ craze. I have not bought many discs lately so these are some of my favorites from a few years back. I hope you have Mos Def's new disc. I love how he fused hip hop, funk and rock all in one. have you ever heard of Jedi Mind Tricks and Scienz of Life ?

I saw DJ Craze live at Planet of the Drums 2. The future of Hip Hop! He came with Bad Company! I'll check out Bukem. I've only heard that one famous track from him... if my memory serves me correctly it's called Horizons or something??? Yeah I got the new Mos Def! It's Dangerous!!! hahaha...

Jedi Mind! Heavenly Devine! Thats the only track I've heard from them.

So do you still throw jams? I use to do that too back then...

Brooklynite10

no more time to throw parties, barely have time to fit in hockey. Horizons is a LTJ's first track ever pressed. That's a CLASSIC ! Go to www.glo.uk.com to cop his Cd's. GLRPS004x & GLRPS007x are two must haves. These are a few years old so I would try to pick up one of his newer albums also. Pick up Jedi Mind's last album. Some of the craziest samples and head knockin beats you will ever hear It's RIDICULOUS. Let me know what you think after you get these album's

Hi Ben,

Not sure if I ever replied to this particular post. But you mention blues in it, and I'm a huge blues fan. If you want to hear some powerful "gutbucket" blues, listen to Buddy Guy's "Sweet Tea" CD. (There's even a song on it for SpiderRat Roger: "Done Got Old.")

Lately, I've also listened to some fun/great blues songs by John Lee Hooker ("Big Legs, Tight Skirt"), the Paul Butterfield Blues Band ("Born in Chicago"), and anything by Keb Mo.

Besides blues, CDs in my player lately include CDs such as "Urban Hymns" by The Verve, "Honorary Citizen" by Peter Tosh, and U2's "War."

One of my favs of all time is Paul Rodgers' (Bad Co front man) Muddy Water's Tribute album. Very nicely done.

I did the time machine thing last week. Did some net digging and scored 3:47 E.S.T. by Klaatu. Remember them? The Lost Beatles?

Hi Ben,

>One of my favs of all time is Paul Rodgers' (Bad Co front man) Muddy Water's Tribute album. Very nicely done.<

I'll have to check that out. I saw Rodgers at a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert last year in Portland. Other musicians there included Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains, Vernon Reid from Living Color, Buddy Guy, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Cox from Band of Gypsies, and Tommy Shannon from Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan's back-up band.

>I did the time machine thing last week. Did some net digging and scored 3:47 E.S.T. by Klaatu. Remember them? The Lost Beatles?<

I think I've read the name somewhere, but don't know anything about 'em.

Check out www.klaatu.org On the site they do a pretty good job of explaining the story. You have heard these guys music, just not who they are. They also have a "samples" section on the download page.

some fun stuff. Good for making peoples heads turn ;)

Hi Ben,

I checked out the site. It was interesting stuff.

That said, in today's mail, I received a five-CD set by AC/DC called "Bonfire." It's a tribute to Bon Scott, their most popular singer, who died in 1980, and I've been listening to it all night.

It SHOULD have "Down Payment Blues" (the story of my life) and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," but even though it doesn't, it has cleared my mind completely of the radio pap I've had to listen today as a neighbor blared his stereo during a party he was hosting.

Whether you like AC/DC or not, you have to agree that after listening to them for several hours, anything by Journey and other corporate "rock" bands quickly disappears into nothingness -- where it belongs. /wtimages/icons/shocked.gif

Mungo Jerry, Dr Hook. Haven't heard of them/from them for a long time. Queen of the Silver Dollar one of my all time favorites from the Dr.
