Under 10's Inline hockey in the UK
The following post is copied from the website of the British Inline Puck Hockey Association http://www.BIPHA.co.uk
Although the report is not signed it has been prepared by the BIPHA's Malcolm Tilley.
If I may add a few background notes of explanation:
The driver for this event was to get the youngest players in the association involved in An Event To Remember, with a view to it becoming an annual event.
An open invitation was issued to every region and club within the BIPHA to get as many under 10's involved as possible. Where current teams exist, they were invited, in those areas where there were no U10 teams it was encouraged that neighbouring clubs combine their U10 players to make-up invitational teams, and finally any U10 players still without a team were invited to liase with the centre with a view to being 'slotted-in' to one of the attending teams.
There was no Tournament Fee levied on any team, the provision of the facilities being bourn by the Association (albeit from the players annual membership subscriptions), please read on:

U10 National Finals - 5th & 6th June 2004
BIPHA INAUGURAL UNDER 10 NATIONALS
What a magnificent weekend! Superbly organised, brilliantly contested and enthusiastically supported by parents and spectators alike. The Inaugural BIPHA Under-10 Nationals held last weekend at Rotherham were a huge success and produced games of the highest quality.
The performances from players of ALL Clubs competing were a credit to their Clubs, their Coaches and to themselves. All of the games were fairly contested and played with such a tremendous spirit that anyone watching, could not help but admire the effort that has gone into organising this weekend.
The group matches were played out on the Saturday and there was some high-tempo action, the pick up the bunch being the game between Norton Cyclones and Torbain Tigers, which finished 2-2 and was a thrill-a-minute. There was also a high-scoring battle between Pontypool and Sheffield Raptors, which finished 7-4 to the Central Region team.
The Sunday morning Play-Off games were preceded by a real first, an ALL GIRL game, featuring a team from North West and the opposition being a collection of girls from all other competing Clubs. The Under-10 ?Select? Team took the honours but what a great advert for the game with so many girls playing and demonstrating ability, technique and a will-to-win.
Every Team had their moment of glory, including the North West and Blackhawks who fought out 2 high-scoring games to decide the final two places. Each game finished 8-6 to Blackhawks but the North West can be proud of their effort and young Dominic Martin can be especially pleased with his haul of 11 goals from those two games alone!
South Wales best moments came in their victory over Blackhawks in the group matches and for a very spirited performance in the 7th/8th play-off. That game was eventually won by Glossopdale Devils who themselves recorded a splendid 8-1 victory on the Saturday after a 5-1 win in the morning.
The 5th & 6th places were decided between Pontypool, who excelled last game on the Saturday beating Durham 4-2 and first thing Sunday with a 5-0 demolition of Glossop. However, they were no match for Sheffield Raptors who took 5th spot and followed up good group wins against Pontypool and North West with victory in the game.
And so the final two deciding games. First up was Durham against Bolton Eagles. Durham had already taken the honours in the group match but this was a much more determined Bolton Team, playing great team hockey. Durham took the lead but Bolton eventually found an equaliser and then with minutes to go, went ahead. However, with 6 seconds to go a Durham forward was adjudged to have been denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity and a Penalty Shot was awarded. Durham converted their chance and the game went into sudden death overtime with Durham snatching victory and 3rd place honours from Bolton?s clutches.
The Final. What a contest! Both sides had already showed throughout the weekend that they were the class acts. Their group match had already been a titanic battle with honours even and this game began the same way. However, Norton took an early lead and then went further in front and looked as though they?d given themselves a solid platform for victory. Torbain Tigers had other ideas though and slowly but surely they played their way back into the game. They pulled a goal back on one period and then a second on the next so that as both teams watched the clock run down in the final third period, they were locked together at 2-2. It was end-to-end action now and both sides had opportunities to clinch it. With less than a minute on the clock, Norton struck the telling blow as young Will Barnes hit the winner and Cyclones were BIPHA Under-10 champions.
The vast majority of players and parents stayed for the Presentation Ceremony where every player received a Medal and a Certificate and every Team were awarded a commemorative Trophy. This was a fantastic advert for Inline Hockey. Congratulations to BIPHA and everyone involved in organising a superb weekend.
