University of Denver Claims National Title And No. 1 Spot In Final USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Denver garnered all 34 first-place votes after clinching the 2004 NCAA Division I Championsihp on Staurday, making the Pioneers the No. 1 team in the final USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll for the first time since November 4, 2002.

Denver defeated the University of Maine, 1-0, in the national title game, making history by becoming the first team to win the NCAA championship by that score. Denver earned its sixth NCAA crown, and its first since 1969. Pioneer goaltender Adam Berkhoel was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, an honor he earned in the final two minutes of Saturday's game when he was faced with a six-on-three situation. Gabe Gauthier scored Denver's only goal on a power-play opportunity halfway through the first period.

The ninth annual USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the American Hockey Coaches Association and American Hockey Magazine, the official publication of USA Hockey.
