Sonora Tournament in the Books
How WCRHL teams stack up at the semester break
December 8, 2003 - A big event in Sonora this weekend shook up the standings a bit, and shows how the teams stack up at the semester break. All DI teams, except UC Irvine, have played 10-12 league games at the break.
CSU San Bernardino proved to be the top team at the Sonora tournament, and with their 4-0 record, now stand tied with Cal Poly SLO for 1st place in the WCRHL Division I Standings. Both teams have 8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. CSUSB outscored it's opponents 40-16 in the 4 games played. They cruised past Chapman 6-3 and their closest match was a 6-3 win against UC Berkeley. CSUSB is riding a 5-game win streak into the break.
Chapman moved up the standings as well, with a 3-1 weekend. Chapman's biggest win was a 5-4 nail-biter against 2003 National Champion Cal Poly Pomona. Chapman now sits tied in 4th place with Moorpark College.
Cal Poly Pomona may be disappointed with their play this weekend, but they pulled out a decent weekend record, and sit in 3rd place, just 1 point behind CSUSB and Cal Poly SLO. Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State skated to an 8-8 tie early in the day. Pomona finished off the day with an 11-1 win vs. Monterey Peninsula College and a 9-4 win vs. UC Davis.
Chico State, going 1-2-1 on the weekend, pulled out a squeaker against the much improved UC Davis squad. The final score was 4-3 in Chico State's favor. Chico State sits in 7th place, just below UC Santa Barbara and ahead of UC Davis.
UC Davis had their best weekend to date, ending up with a 2-2 record. UC Davis defeated UC Berkeley 8-4 and Monterey Peninsula College 9-4. UC Davis sits in 8th place, holding the final playoff spot if the season were to end today.
Berkeley managed a 6-4 win vs. Monterey Peninsula College, and suffered 3 losses throughout the day. Berkeley had a great win at the Huntington Beach tournament in November against Moorpark College, handing them 1 of their 2 losses on the season. Berkeley currently sits tied for 9th place with UC Irvine, and will fight to get to that 8th place spot to earn the rights to the playoffs.
Monterey Peninsula College did go 0-4 this weekend, but had two games that definitely could have been their's for the taking. The 6-4 loss vs. Berkeley and the 9-4 loss vs. Davis. Their other 2 losses came at the hands of Cal Poly Pomona and CSU San Bernardino. MPC has just 1 win on the season, but with 1 or 2 good tournaments in the Spring, could wiggle their way into the 8th spot.
When all is said and done, WCRHL teams could see some movement in the National Rankings. Definitely CSUSB getting some respect as the look to be the top team in the WCRHL so far this season. And don't forget Chapman, who posted big wins against UC Santa Barbara at Huntington and Cal Poly Pomona at Sonora.
See the Division I Standings page for the standings, or Latest Event Results for Sonora game scores.
Division II Standings are not in yet. They will be plugged in and a write-up will be done once the league receives the game scores from it's scorekeepers.
All Player/Goalie Statistics will be entered over the Winter Break. A few different people will be entering them, so they will not be entered in any particular order.
