Advice on skates

I need some advice on purchasing some skates for myself. My 8 year old son plays on a travelling team and I bought a cheap pair of Missions for myself to practice with him. They hurt my feet so bad that after 10 minutes or so, I have to take them off. A salesperson at a local store told me that that's typical with the Missions because they run narrow. Any recommendations? I don't need the greatest skate in the world as all I do is practice with him a few times a week and don't play on a team. Also, I weigh about 220lbs if that makes a difference. As a fellow big dude, I have found CCM's to be cut a little wider than the Missions. I've played in skates from all of the major vendors, and the CCM's fit me best. They are not as light as the Missions, but if I was worried about weight I think I would start looking a little higher than my ankles.

Being a real little guy, I can't give you personal advice, but I work in a pro-shop and all the big guys seem to be buying Easton Big Wheel skates, mainly because you can get them real cheap(as low as $100) and you can get them as wide as EE.

Hmm.. which Mission do you have( it matters, because they have a "stiffness" rating)? Cheap? The point of the matter is this, does the skate FIT well and is it the proper size? What does being a "narrow" skate mean? I mean, do you wear a wide street shoe? If not, it has no bearing on this issue, actually it probably helps more to have a tight fitting skate. I would HAVE to believe since you are not skating much in them, that you still haven't even broken these skates in yet (it takes LOTS of SWEAT). Any skate will hurt when you 1st buy them and since you skate so little, it is going to take you awhile to get them properly broke in. Don't blame the skate, geez. laters, j-bo

My first skates were Missions and even after one year they were still hurting. My toes and top of the foot were in pain after 40 minutes. Sometimes they would go numb. I made them as loose as I could at the toes as someone suggested and it still didn't help. I then purchased a pair of Quick Change Skates which although not inexpensive, I wanted to be able to change the wheels to play outdoors or in. It turned out to be a great choice. I get excellent support and can just have one pair of skates to play on any surface. Being 220 and 5'9" it meets my needs for durability/strength.

Thanks for the advice on the Eastons, I'm going to try them, or the CCM's someone else recommended. Which Eastons are they. I saw a Z-Air but can't find a Z-air anywhere else on the web in an inline skate, only ice. Unfortunately, I've had nothing but bad luck with inlinesports.com. My Missions were shipped 3 days after I orderd them, not shipped the way I paid for, and then arrived with no laces. I gave them another shot on some skates and pads for my youngest son and they didn't ship them until 11 days after I ordered them. I placed the order on 12/1 and received them just in time for x-mas. May still have to go with them if I can't find them anywhere else. Thanks again for the advice.

appreciate the advice, i wear these as long as i can. they are the Mission Control series. i do understand that they are going to hurt a bit and i expected that, but this is an unbearable pain. i wore them for about 15 minutes saturday and my foot still hurt yesterday. i've talked to my kid's coaches, other people around the rink and they all said that's more pain then there should be. i've tried them laced up loose, incredibly tight, and everywhere in between with no luck. i'll look at the hockey monkey site today. thanks again

The best skate you can buy is a Graf 705 and put a nice roller chassis on it.
