I thought about the whole IHC problem and thought we should get a big tournament together, with the proceeds going to IHC. I know I could get my team to do it. Especially for IHC. Maybe we can get Patty to help us put something together. Sound good to anyone?

I htink that is a great idea, but the problem is where, when, and how.

I can help with the "how"... but it's the when and where.
When....
All tournaments kick their series off in Feb & March, so trying to find a free weekend when there's not 2 tournaments booked already would be difficult. (My next free weekend is April 15th - Easter) This would have been a great idea in January, and I'm afraid that April or May might be too late for what needs to be accomplished.
Where...
To make it worth it, you need to find a rink that will donate the rink time, otherwise rink rental would eat up most of the proceeds. Next question...what city?
How...
I can help with organizing and running it.
Buying prizes is the next issue, unless you could find companies to kick in product donations.
Everyone thinks it's easy, but trust me, there's alot of work and coordination that has to be done "behind the scenes". To try and "throw one together" would be a disaster.

I think I might be able to solve the where if suburban Chicago is ok with everyone. Another thing everyone must keep in mind is that you have to pay refs, scorekeepers, managers, etc.

The costs that would need to be covered for tournament expenses include: Rink rental, prizes, refs, scorekeepers, flyers, and insurance. I've had numerous calls today from Vendors willing to donate prizes, and I'm sure if the event were in CA my staff would volunteer to ref and scorekeep. The main problem is the rink rental, but if we ran an ironman (adult or coed event) from midnight to 5 AM, we might be able to get the rental down to an affordable rate. If you have any suggestions on rinks that might donate rink time, please email me at

Again, I must stress that if you want Topcat's help on the event, it cannot happen until April or May...if that's not too late.

Patty,
We would need 2 rinks right? Otherwise I would say try Surf City in Huntington Beach. They always have plenty of rink time and if you get a block I am sure they would help you out. 2 rinks would be tough. What about LaVerne or if it is Iron Man maybe Anaheim would help you out. If you need volunteers at the tournament let me know. Also, April is not too late. Better a little bit late then not at all

Hi Cali,
Thanks for your support. At this time, I'm not looking to do anything like a tournament, nor do I wish to place that burden on someone else's shoulders.
Of course, if there are tournament organizers out there making so much money that they have some left over after their tournaments are over, they certainly can send some of it to IHC. LOL.
Keep rollin'!
Sincerely,
Richard Graham
