We hosted a mini-tournament series, strictly in-house, over the past weekend, that turned out to be a lot of fun for all our players, and we thought to share it:
1. Five teams, any number of players on a team roster (varied by division), from "iron man" four, to a-couple-of-lines' 8 skaters & the goalkeeper.
2. Round robin play, ten games total, each team plays the other four once each. 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, fewest-points-allowed is first tiebreaker.
3. Each game was a single period of play. (We used 6 minutes, 8 minutes, 12 minutes, depending on time available, age of players, etc.)
4. After ten games of the round robin, the teams were seeded for playoffs:
playoff game 1: 5th place vs. 4th place (loser out)
playoff game 2: 3rd place vs. 2nd place
playoff game 3: winner game 1 vs. loser game 2 (loser out)
playoff game 4: winner game 2 vs. 1st place
playoff game 5: winner game 3 vs. loser game 4 (loser out)
playoff game 6: winner game 5 vs. winner game 4, for the championship.
With the 6 minute periods, you get the 16 games in in 3.5 hours! really cool...
We are going to do all six divisions: Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, Midget, Adult Novice and Adult Premier mixed in together over the Labor Day weekend, in Nations-Tobin's Grand Opening and First Annual "Puckapalooza" inline Hockey Mini-Tournament. We are playing all 96 games, in 25 minutes time slots, 12 minute, stop-clock games, from 8:00 p.m. Friday night, through 8:30 p.m. Monday evening.
We highly recommend this format...
Incidentally, we also designated that the two teams playing the previous game had to ref/scorekeep the subsequent game, with association referees used only for the games 5 & 6 of the playoffs.
In this format, each team is guaranteed 5 games, with 4 of each division's five teams getting 6-8 games, depending on playoff outcomes...
Even with a single division playing the 16 games straight, and only the 6-minute period per game, players were exhausted at the end of the 3 and one-half hours of play.
This was a great variation of the iron-man theme. Those of you sports world-travelers will recognize the 6-game playoff form as that used by the Australian Football League for 50 years...
